Big Medicine Pretty Water

The way home…

  • Big Medicine Pretty Water

Trapped in a cabin with her dying uncle during a blizzard in the Jemez Mountains of Northern New Mexico in 1927, Alyssa Aleeray must create a plan to save their lives. Abandoned at birth fourteen years before and found wrapped in a Navajo blanket, she has been raised in the ways of her ancestors by her adoptive family in Otowi Station, a village along the historic Chile Line. For years, Bootlegger Boss Walt has schemed to destroy Alyssa’s Native American lifestyle by separating her from the family she loves. For years, her tenacious spirit has served her well. But overcoming the death-defying challenges she now faces will require divine intervention. Her adoptive father often predicted, “Someday, Alyssa will attract Big Medicine.” Will his dream for her come true?

This is a work of Historical Fiction—American Southwest. Primary subjects include Native American, Hispanic, and Anglo Cross-Cultural influences in the 1920s; Puebloan Culture along the Rio Grande, near Los Alamos; Indigenous Traditions and Lifeways in the American Southwest.

    “PRAISE FOR SKIES . . .

“In Skies, Mike Katko conveys the complexities of life experiences through straightforward images of day-to-day life and the poet’s craft. He weaves together images of past and present in an often bittersweet telling. The simplicity of the images combined with his sensitivity and astute observations are sprinkled with loss and hope, disappointment and love, in an expression of our universal humanity.”
